New Single, “Out of the Dirt”!
I wrote “Out of the Dirt” with the amazing Lori McKenna. I told Lori I was hoping to make something with a stomping beat and a hypnotic, mesmerizing lyrical chant. The result was even more stomping and mesmeric than I had hoped. The track is pretty simple, just me on the piano, John on fretless bass and Jake on drums. As we were cutting the track, everyone agreed it needed some hot lead guitar. But instead of adding a guitar of my own later, we reached out to Jason Isbell to see if he wanted to throw down. The answer was yes (what a day!) and the results speak for themselves: Jason fucking rocks, as we already knew.

New Semisonic Album!!
Dear Friends,
So amazed to tell you that the new Semisonic album, “Little Bit of Sun,” will be released on November 3rd! It rocks. We will be sharing more info about the record in the weeks to come.. Today we’re releasing a new single from the album. It’s called “The Rope,” and it also rocks. It’s an ode to Los Angeles disguised as a break-up song. A lot of songwriters would love to break up with LA so it makes sense to me!

New Semisonic Music Out NOW!
I’m overjoyed to announce Semisonic’s two new songs, “Little Bit Of Sun” and “Grown Your Own”!!
“Little Bit of Sun” came out really fast. We’ve all been so beaten down by darkness for the last few years, it’s like we can hardly ask for a full sky of sunshine. We can get by on a little bit, but at some point we want it all!
I wrote “Grow Your Own” about the joy and blue sky of starting a band. If you’re a musician and you hear some music you love, you’re gonna want to make some yourself. Grow your own. And if you don’t hear the music you want to hear in the world, well then, all the more reason to grow your own.
Looking forward to performing these this month while on tour with the Barenaked Ladies!
Semisonic On Tour with the Barenaked Ladies!
I’m excited to announce that the band will be on tour with our friends the Barenaked Ladies in June 2023 for their Last Summer On Earth Tour!!
“Red Light” – Official Music Video
My new release is “Red Light,” from the Dancing on the Moon EP. The song is about three things: 1) the day I found out that the master tapes of my two bands Trip Shakespeare and Semisonic had burned in the infamous Universal Music fire (the red light of the fire seen from the clouds); 2) my love for recording on tape despite #1 (thus the red light of the title); and 3) my Mom’s memory loss – almost as though her master tapes are being gradually erased. In the video, the ghosts of all these vanishing things are played by a yellow 1971 Ford Mustang and my daughter in a ghost costume in the passenger seat. Hope you love it. Directed by Yazz alali and edited by Sara Mulford. Shout out to Ethan Gruska and Jenny Owen Youngs for writing the song with me, and Ethan and John Mark Nelson for producing it with me.

New Single – “Dancing On The Moon” – Official Music Video
My new single, “Dancing On The Moon” is out today!
I wrote the chorus at my piano, and it felt like a found object, like something I saw on the sidewalk and picked up. To me, it really does sound like a couple, marooned on a distant moon, trying to make contact with someone – anyone – and dancing under the super-lonely stars.
